    FFXIV Empty FFXIV

Post  Jestor Wed Aug 05, 2009 3:22 pm

    (Source: http://www.rpgamer.com/news/Q3-2009/080509a.html)

New information about Final Fantasy XIV's world, races, and gameplay has come to light thanks to Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu. Eorzea contains at least three large towns: the desert Uldaha, the forest Gridania, and the sea port, pirate-filled town Rimsa-Rominsa. The game will have weather changes and a day to night system with one real-time hour equaling a single game day.

All of the races from Final Fantasy XI are returning, but have slight modifications and new names. Hyuran are the new Humes and are the most common race in Eorzea. Even among themselves, they are divided into two groups: those who moved from the outer islands into lower areas and those who live in the higher regions.

Elzen are taking the place of the Elvaan, though little has been revealed about them as of now. Galka have been replaced by the tailless Roegadyn race. They are seafairing folk from the North who are often hired as mercenaries by other races. Filling the role of the cute little race are the Lalafell. This replacement for the Tarutaru are a highly intelligent race who are typically farmers in the South of Eorzea.

Finally, in place of Mithra are the Miqo'te, a race divided into two groups: sunseekers and moonguardians. As with the Mithra, men are rare for this race. According to Square Enix, racial differences are not as major in FFXIV, however the difference of gender is important, likely due to equipment playing a major role in job classes. In terms of customization, players can modify character features such as face style, skin tone, eye color, and hair color or style.

As stated before, levels and experience are not the game's focus for progress, equipment is. Players can change equipment on the fly in order to change their job. This means players wearing fishing gear will be fishermen, but can quickly equip a staff to become a mage. These weapons are key to character development and having the ability to change between jobs mid battle should hopefully work toward the goal of making the experience more solo friendly.

It is stated that item resistance or durability will be decreased with use. How all of this will work in battle is still to be seen, though combat is not action-oriented. It's a modified real-time system from Final Fantasy XI's style of play, meaning that fights no longer require parties to engage a target and attack.

Missions will have a larger focus in Final Fantasy XIV, and players will need to go to guilds to receive permits to access them. These quests will typically take thirty minutes or less to complete and will give players the option of deciding how many people can assist in these diverse missions.

    Also from that site:

New Final Fantasy XIV details have recently come to light via a video interview put on a companion DVD for the September 2009 issue of Famitsu. The interview was conducted with producer Hiromichi Tanaka and director Nobuaki Komoto.

One of the more notable details is that Final Fantasy XIV will not have experience points or a leveling system. Tanaka says "It will be a different system altogether." Komoto hinted that players will "try many different things and tackle any number of quests and grow naturally from their experiences," and be able to "practice one skill one day, [and] work on another one the next."

A key factor in Final Fantasy XIV's character advancement system will be jobs, as Komoto believes the "main factor behind Final Fantasy XI's lasting appeal is the job system." However, he noted that the job system will also be "completely different," with weapons determining how people play and fight.

The developers plan to give both solo and group players opportunity to succeed in Final Fantasy XIV, as opposed to Final Fantasy XI which has been criticized for its lack of reasonable solo play options. The popular Nobuo Uematsu will also be returning to compose the game's score. Final Fantasy XIV is currently planned for release on the PC and PS3 in 2010.

Thanks for the info. An MMO without XP or leveling, I wonder how it's going to work. =|

Leveling based on weapons? I'll never level then! I suck at trying to get equipment upgrades!

I'm just disapointed there's no male cat race. So I'll be making Nekaru as a Miqo'te Sunseeker.

What seemed most interesting to me was you could swap jobs in battle based on what weapon you were using...

But I do like the fact it seems like it will be neat to RP in esp if you can do most all the story stuff solo or in small group.

Looks like you beat me to it. I think http://thestoppableforce.net/2009/08/05/burly-roegadyn-fisherman-ftw/#more-1121 describes it better though. Heh heh...

Yeah the little gamer in me was hoping to play Manthras and female galkas but it looks like he's gonna have to go cry in a theoretical corner.

I'm gonna do what I can to stave off my emotions for now. I arguably have a year left to have wacky hijinx with Rhoa so I want to enjoy her before I start planning on 14.

Other tidbits...apparently the Miqo'te are tied to the phase of the day, with Sunchasers liking daytime, and Moonguardians liking nighttime.

Also it appears that instead of being a side thing as it is in XI, crafting is it's own job set in XIV. And that reminds me a lot of Star Wars Galaxies where you could 'level up' as craft or support professions.

And it was also said that there still would be an MMO style grind involved. (Guessing it will be with leveling up the weapon skills...so instead of exp and levels...it's all about skilling up your weapons. Almost sounds like a cross between FFII and FFIII.)

Same. I know I'm going to try it out...but the more I learn about it the more I have mixed feelings.

I know FFXI, and I have fun with it.

this game is looking like a mix of lots of things so it won't be like the FFXI I know. Which is a good thing that it will be its own stand alone game.

I'm still of the prediction that when XIV comes out my LS on Bismarck will disband as ppl go try that out, and then I'd move Nekaru over to Lakshmi (unless everyone had moved to Bismarck by then, but I doubt that would happen).

So yes, it looks pretty, but that's another thing...would everyone's PC be able to run it if it looks so pretty.

(And I'm still not sure how well I like the job based on equipment that you can change mid fight and have to level up your equipment instead...or maybe you learn abilities from certain equipment like in FFIX. So many questions still out there.)

Just noticed that the offical site: http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/
    has been updated.

And there's one big thing that bothers me...and it's the 'race distribution'. On there saying that the Humans are the most populace on the continent.

As said in another thread...most people don't play normal humans.

Also they say on the site that the Mithra are the fewest in number and very solitary in nature (at least to other non-Mithra). But we all know that the Mithra like characters will probably make up a good 30-40% of the 5 races and probably be the most numerous of them.

And I'm still unsure what to think of the whole armory/job/weapon thing. But reading through the page I see things taken from the Assault missions from ToAU. So still wanting to check it out, but will still keep XI as well.

Actually, from what I've heard male Taru are the most populous race of all of FFXI... which I guess rings true that there are lots of male Taru compared to women in 14. Far as the mithras are concerned I think it's just the token phrase that attracts people. Sort of like how Blood Elves are supposed to be very few and struggling to survive-last I checked there's two BE for every other Horde regardless of what that other's race is.

    I think th

I wanna make either a silly grunt pirate Galka or a banished Moon Mithra that hates everyone. If I ever actually do we'll have to see.
